President’s Message May 2025
From Oaths to Legacy: A Month of Meaningful Moments
BY ANNIE MARTÍNEZ
As we move through May, I’m filled with gratitude and pride at all we’ve accomplished together this spring. The Denver Bar Association has mobilized in powerful ways: issuing a public statement affirming the rule of law, signing on to amici briefs that matter, hosting a courthouse demonstration, and celebrating the people and programs that define who we are.
On May 1st, we gathered at the federal courthouse for Rule of Law Day, where we had the honor of reaffirming our attorney oaths before Judge S. Kato Crews, after a demonstration outside. Standing together in that space, anchored by our shared commitment to justice, was one of the highlights of my year.
Just days later, on May 3rd, Metro Volunteer Lawyers held a record-breaking Spring Soirée. Thanks to the leadership of Anthony and his team, we had more sponsors than ever and raised more money than last year, ensuring that pro bono legal services remain strong in our community. MVL continues to be the heart of our access to justice work, and it deserves our ongoing support.
We also had the joy of honoring legacy at the DBA Seniors’ 50-Year Banquet on May 8th. With the help of past Executive Director Chuck Turner, we celebrated the careers of attorneys who have practiced for 50 years or more. Representatives from the Young Lawyers Division read moving tributes, and our president-elect, Danaé Kinnett, and Executive Director, Nicoal Sperrazza, presented medals to our honorees. It was a touching moment of intergenerational connection and mutual admiration.
This May is also Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, a time to honor the rich contributions of AANHPI lawyers, judges, scholars, and community leaders-past and present. Their leadership and service strengthen the legal profession and remind us that representation matters, and that justice must reflect the diversity of the communities we serve and the inclusive future we are building together.
As we look ahead to our Annual Awards Reception and Passing the Gavel on July 17th, I hope you’ll take a moment to reflect on all that we’ve done together, and all that remains possible when we stand united in our values.
In community and solidarity,
Annie Martínez
