The Sam Cary Takeover?!
At the DBA, we strive to collaborate and support our diversity/affinity bar associations that have members in the Denver Metro area. Part of the Docket’s undergoing changes is to focus more on collaborations and to reinforce our diverse Denver legal community. With that, we are proud to start collaborations in earnest with the Sam Cary Bar Association takeover of The Docket in celebration of Black History Month! A majority of this month’s articles are written by SCBA members as they lend their voices to represent the culture celebrated and look back fondly on local Black leadership as well. We thank them for their contribution.

2026 DBA Member Appreciation Event
The DBA Member Appreciation event on January 29, 2026, went swimmingly again, with plenty of food, libations, and the opportunity to explore through the Meow Wolf Convergence Station exhibit halls. The event sold out (note: this was a free event for DBA members and heavily discounted for guests), and about 100 members attended, though luckily, it never felt packed as the venue expands well to allow for several areas of socialization. Exploring the exhibit with friends and colleagues made for a wonderful experience! If you were unable to make it to this year’s appreciation event, we highly recommend setting a reminder for next year’s: January 21, 2027!
That all said, this event would not have been possible without the sponsors that stepped up to aid in supporting and appreciating the members of the Denver Bar Association.

Investing in the Attorneys of Tomorrow
On January 28, 2026, Executive Director, Nicoal Sperrazza, DBA President, Danaé Kinnett, and River Sedaka visited the University of Denver campus, along with remote guests Immediate-Past President, Annie Martínez, and Tiera Brown, to hold a town hall event with the law students currently attending. During the event, students had the chance to ask questions concerning early practice tips, what a young attorney should focus on to expand their network, and how to find time to de-stress. As attendance was great, there are hopes to hold future town hall meetings on DU’s campus moving forward.
Pets of the Denver Bar Association
We’re excited to introduce a new section of the Docket: The Pets of the DBA! Our president, Danae Kinnett, noticed that our members receive appreciation and perks; however, what about the pets that keep us all insane when we return home? This section is for them.
Want to have your pet included in the next DBA Docket issue? Say hi, and send pictures of your pets to vwerner@cobar.org!

Attorney’s Fees Agreements and the Colorado Consumer Protection Act
February 12, 2026 | 7:30 AM – 8:20 AM | via Zoom
Take advantage of this great opportunity to learn about a new Colorado law which directly impacts your law office’s attorney’s fee agreements and the disclosures required to all current and prospective clients. The topic arises due to the Colorado Legislature’s passage of House Bill 25-1090 (codified as C.R.S. § 6-1-737), which went into effect on January 1, 2026. Specifically, this new law requires that any person, including attorneys, offering services must prominently disclose the total price of services or provide an explanation that the total price cannot reasonably be known at the time services are offered due to factors, which must be clearly and conspicuously described, that will determine the total price. Failure to comply may subject the service provider to damages under the Colorado Consumer Protection Act, which include treble damages and attorney’s fees. This presentation will be led by Denver business attorney Herrick K. Lidstone, Jr., who has published an extensive paper on this new law. This presentation, like all Courtroom Chats, will occur in a casual “roundtable” format in which attendees are encouraged to ask questions and participate in a dialogue with the presenters.
