President’s Message March 2025

Celebrating Women in Law, Expanding Access to Justice, and Prioritizing Well-Being

BY ANNIE MARTÍNEZ

Spring has finally arrived, and as we’re still in March, it’s a great time to reflect on the incredible contributions of women in the legal profession and beyond for Women’s History Month. Here in Colorado, we are fortunate to have a strong community of women attorneys who have paved the way for progress in our field. The DBA and organizations, such as the Colorado Women’s Bar Association, continue supporting, mentoring, and uplifting women in the profession, ensuring that the next generation of lawyers benefits from greater inclusivity and equity. As we honor the women who have shaped our profession, let’s also commit to fostering an environment where all voices are heard and valued.

This month has also included many dire reminders of the pressing need to expand access to justice. Many individuals and families across our state face legal challenges without the resources to address them. One way we, as legal professionals, can make a difference is by offering our time and expertise in an accessible manner. Metro Volunteer Lawyers (MVL) is an outstanding organization that connects attorneys with individuals who need legal assistance but cannot afford it. Whether you take on a pro bono case, provide limited-scope representation or volunteer for legal clinics, your contributions can have a life-changing impact. I encourage all members to consider how they can help make legal services more accessible to those in need.

Finally, as we shake off winter, it’s an ideal time to focus on lawyer wellness. The demands of our profession are sometimes overwhelming. It is essential to prioritize mental and physical well-being. If you’re looking for ways to recharge, Colorado offers numerous opportunities from outdoor activities like hiking at Red Rocks Park, soaking in the restorative waters of Indian Hot Springs, or simply taking a moment to step outside and enjoy the fresh air at a nearby park or an upstanding establishment’s patio. Organizations such as COLAP (Colorado Lawyer Assistance Program) provide confidential resources for lawyers dealing with stress, burnout, or mental health challenges. Remember, taking care of yourself isn’t just beneficial for you—it strengthens our entire profession.

Let’s use the rest of this month to celebrate the achievements of women in law, recommit ourselves to expanding access to justice, and take meaningful steps toward our own well-being. Our profession is at its best when we support one another in service and self-care.

Best,

Annie Martínez
